| Jaguar Jaguar is a Britsh luxury auto manufacturer founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company by two motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley. In 1935, the name SS Jaguar first appeared on a 2.5 litre sedan. The company was renamed Jaguar in 1945. Jaguar made elegantly-styled sports cars and luxury sedans in the 1950s which created great appeal for the brand. Jaguar bought Daimler (not Daimler-Benz) in 1960 from Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA). In 1966 Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and Austin-Morris to form British Motor Holdings (BMH). In 1968 BMH merged with Leyland and Rover, creating British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC). Financial difficulties led to its effective nationalisation in 1975 and the company became BL Ltd (BL). Jaguar was floated off as a separate company in 1984. The Ford Motor Company aqcuired Jaguar in January 1990. Jaguar cars gained a reputation for unreliability during the 1970s and 1980s, but reliability and build quality improved dramatically under Ford and some models have taken top awards for customer satisfaction. Ford is expected to announce Jaguar's sale soon. http://www.jaguar.com |
