| Cummins Cummins is named after one of its key founders, inventor-mechanic Clessie Cummins. He was financially backed by investor William Irwin, starting in 1918, as he improved on existing diesel engine designs. Cummins was founded in 1919. Today, Cummins makes both diesel and natural gas engines which are used in all types of vehicles from light and medium duty trucks to heavy equipment, trucks, machinery and marine applications.
