The Autocar name has been synonymous with innovation in truck design for more than a century. Autocar is the oldest vehicle nameplate in continuous production in the United States. Louis and John Clarke founded Autocar and produced their first vehicle, a gas-powered tricycle, in 1897. Autocar trucks were used by fire departments as well as freight companies. Autocar over-the-road semi-truck tractors were considered the peak of trucking luxury until the 1980's. The modern Autocar truck's focus is waste management, though there is a collector's showcase on the website.
